Board of Directors

As a not for profit organization,  the affairs and business of the Southside Community Center are managed by a Board of Directors consisting of no less than nine (9) nor more than fifteen (15) Directors.  Board membership is appointed through election and each member serves a minimum of two years.  The board’s committees include Finance, Personnel, Fundraising, Program, and House.  To learn more about the board please contact the board president at Directors@sscc-ithaca.org

Board Committees

Members of the Board of Directors chair five committees to delegate the work of managing the center.  The committees comprised of board members and interested volunteers.  To learn more about volunteering for a committee please contact the board president at Directors@sscc-ithaca.org.  Each committee has a separate focus highlighted below:

Finance Committee

  • The Finance Committee is responsible for studying and making recommendations to the Board relating to all aspects of financial planning, financial management, and financial results.  This committee oversees investments, endowments, and capital programs, if appropriate.
  • The Finance Committee is responsible for budgeting.  The full board is responsible for review of financial statements.
  • The Treasurer, with the help of the Finance Committee, prepare financial reports, approve payment of bills, perform other bookkeeping functions, and advise the board when income and expenditures are out of balance.
  • The Finance Committee is responsible for hiring a CPA for an annual audit of the books, or if not financially feasible, performing the audit itself.

Personnel Committee

  • Review and approval of annual salary increase budget.
  • Guides development, review and authorization of personnel policies and procedures.
  • Leads evaluation of the Executive Director.
  • Assists Executive Director with leadership and management matters when requested.

Program Committee

  • Works with the program coordinator to develop resources and opportunities for funding.
  • Evaluates and presents all new programming to the Board of Directors.

House Committee

  • Works with Executive Director and other staff to define facility needs.
  • Works with specialists to evaluate costs on major repairs and renovations.
  • Presents all house related costs to the Board of Directors for approval.

Fundraising Committee

  • Develops and maintains the Annual Campaign.
  • Develops fund raising opportunities and ideas.
  • Supports the Executive Director in searching for and obtaining grants, gifts and other types of funding.
  • Supports the Executive Director in developing fundraising materials.

Youth Programming

Throughout the year there are a number of programs and activities run for school aged children.  These activities range from academic tutoring to field trips to recreation and culture enrichment.  If you are interested in participating in and/or developing youth activities please contact the Center at Southside@sscc-ithaca.org or by calling 607.273.4190.

Special Events

Volunteers are always needed to assist with our signature events such as Juneteenth, Kwanzaa, and the Black History Month Lecture Series.  To volunteer your time and expertise for these programs please contact the Center at Southside@sscc-ithaca.org or by calling 607.273.4190.
