Spring programs Participants meet weekly and play other teams with instruction and coaching by Jordan Harap and the men of Sigmal Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
FITNESS FOR YOUTH (Thursdays 6:30pm-8pm, ages 11-18) Come and get your work out on with Ithaca's very own Kenny "True" Benton & Lester McNair of Free Will Awareness. They will be working with students in a variety of settings to condition and tone the body as well as discussions about healthy eating choices to promote and ecourage holistic living.
YOUTH "BINGO 4 PRIZES" (Mondays 5:30pm-7:30pm, ages 12 and under) Supervised by Southside staff Charles Rhody and Lisa Paoangeli, children enjoy an evening of fun and always leave with something. Snacks are provided.
AFTERSCHOOL WITH SOUTHSIDE (Monday - Friday 2:00pm-5:30pm, all ages) REACH volunteers from Cornell University will be available everyday afterschool for homework help and will lead discussions with students on critical social issues of the black and latino community. Also for elementary students, Southside will be providing activities, homework help, and reading time.
INTRODUCTION TO CAPOEIRA (Tuesdays 5:30pm-6:30pm, ages 6-10) Capoeira is bes described as "a dance like a fight, a fight like a dance". An Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, music, and dance, it was created in Brazil by slaves brought from Africa. This class is an introduction to the basic movements, music, and culture of capoeira, wich a focus on the "Sequences of Mestre Bimba" - attack and defense training combinations developed by the capoeira master who is considered the counder of modern "capoeira regional".
AFRICAN DRUM AND DANCE (Tuesdays 6:30pm-8pm, all ages) Come out and learn to place traditional African rhythms with Eugene Scott, local musician/teacher. In order to understand the important relationship between drummer and dance, participants will also place for the African Dance class lead by Shene James of Cornell University. Together these two classes will coordinate an amazing presentation to be showcased at our Juneteenth celebration.
TAP CLASS (Mondays 4pm-5pm, ages 5-8) Continuing the African american legacy of tap dance, SSCC will be offering beginning tap classes for children ages 5-8. This program is being run by Cornell University student Shene James who has been studying tap for over 15 years and is passionate about teaching young people.
DANCE CREW (Thursdays 5pm-6:30, ages 12-16) Participants will work along with Urban Blaze, the hip-hop crew from Cornell University on dance routines to be performed at various events throughout the year, ending with a performance at Juneteenth. They will be taught hip-hop dance styles through choreography and freestyle.
PIANO LESSONS FOR YOUTH (by appointment) Piano lessons will be offered this winter/spring season from Ithaca College and Cornell student volunteers. Lessons will be scheduled according to availability.
